Watercolor Workshop: The Cardinal
Capture the beauty of one of nature's most recognizable songbirds in this fun watercolor workshop.
Service Description
In this class, you'll create a charming red cardinal perched on a branch against a soft, dreamy watercolor background. The project combines loose watercolor techniques with simple details to produce a striking finished painting that looks beautiful framed or displayed year-round. Designed for beginners and intermediate painters alike, this workshop will guide you through each step—from creating luminous background washes and layering rich crimson tones to adding expressive features like the cardinal's crest, bright beak, and subtle feather details. You'll also learn techniques for preserving highlights, building depth with glazing, and achieving clean edges that make your subject stand out. In this workshop, you'll learn how to: Create soft, flowing watercolor backgrounds using wet-on-wet techniques. Layer transparent colors to build depth and vibrant reds. Paint a simple bird with easy-to-follow shapes and proportions. Add contrast with shadows and fine details. Finish your painting with crisp highlights and finishing touches. By the end of the class, you'll leave with a beautiful cardinal watercolor and the confidence to apply these techniques to future bird and wildlife paintings. Whether you're new to watercolor or looking to refine your skills, this relaxing project offers a rewarding way to explore color, texture, and composition.
